SMP Aftercare: What to Expect in the First 7 Days
Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a life-changing treatment that restores the look of hair density and boosts confidence. But just like any cosmetic procedure, aftercare is essential to ensure your results heal properly and last for years.
At SMP Clinic & Training Academy, 22 Deanery Way, Stockport, SK1 1NA, our lead practitioner Ell uses the Au-Natural Technique™ to achieve soft, realistic results — and we provide every client with a tailored aftercare plan.
Here’s your day-by-day guide for the first 7 days after SMP treatment.
Why SMP Aftercare Matters
SMP pigments are applied into the upper layers of your skin. During healing, your scalp needs time to recover and lock in the pigment. Following proper aftercare will:
- Ensure even pigment retention
- Prevent unnecessary fading
- Avoid irritation or infection
- Give you the most natural results possible
Day 1: Immediately After Treatment
- Expect redness and mild sensitivity — this is completely normal.
- Your scalp may feel warm or tight for the first 24 hours.
- Do not touch, scratch, or wash your scalp.
- Avoid hats unless absolutely necessary, and keep the scalp clean and dry.
Day 2–3: Early Healing Stage
- Redness should begin to fade.
- Tiny scabs may form where the pigment was applied — this is part of normal healing.
- Still avoid washing your scalp.
- Keep away from heavy sweating, swimming, and steam rooms.
- Avoid direct sun exposure.
👉 Pro tip from Ell: Sleep on a clean pillowcase to avoid bacteria irritating your scalp.
Day 4–5: Pigment Settling
- The scalp should feel less sensitive.
- Scabs may begin to flake off naturally — don’t pick at them.
- Light itching is common, which is a sign of healing.
- You may notice the pigment looking slightly lighter — this is normal as the skin heals.
👉 At this stage, you can start gently rinsing your scalp with lukewarm water (no shampoo yet).
Day 6–7: Recovery Progress
- Most redness will have disappeared.
- Any flaking or dryness should be settling down.
- Pigment will begin to look more blended and natural.
- You may apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser if your scalp feels dry.
👉 By Day 7, your scalp is mostly healed — but avoid gym workouts, swimming, or shaving until at least Day 10.
SMP Aftercare Do’s and Don’ts
✅ Do:
- Follow Ell’s personalised aftercare instructions.
- Keep your scalp dry for the first 3 days.
- Use sunscreen (SPF 30+) after healing to protect your pigment.
- Stay hydrated and eat a healthy diet to support skin recovery.
❌ Don’t:
- Pick, scratch, or rub your scalp.
- Apply oils, lotions, or shampoo in the first few days.
- Expose your scalp to strong sunlight or tanning beds.
- Over-exercise, swim, or use saunas/steam rooms during healing.
What Happens After 7 Days?
After the first week, your scalp will continue to settle over the next few weeks:
- By 10–14 days: You can resume normal washing and light exercise.
- By 4 weeks: The skin is fully healed.
- If needed, you’ll return for follow-up sessions to build density and refine results.
With the Au-Natural Technique™, pigments are layered gradually, meaning each session looks better than the last.
Long-Term SMP Care
To keep your SMP looking sharp for years:
- Moisturise regularly
- Always use SPF on your scalp outdoors
- Book top-ups every 2–4 years to refresh your look
